Eiffel Tower Elevators

While its the Eiffel Tower’s iconic iron lattice design is instantly recognizable, one of the lesser-known but equally fascinating aspects of the monument lies in its elevators. These lifts, which carry millions of passengers to the different levels of the tower each year, are not just a means of transport but a marvel of engineering and innovation that has evolved since the tower’s inauguration in 1889. When Gustave Eiffel designed his tower for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair), one of the biggest challenges was finding a way to move people efficiently to the upper platforms. At 300 meters tall (324 meters including antennas), the Eiffel Tower was the tallest structure in the world at the time, and conventional elevator systems were not capable of handling the extreme height or the sloping legs of the tower.

Early elevator manufacturers hesitated to take on the project, citing safety and mechanical difficulties. Eventually, the French company Roux, Combaluzier & Lepape, together with the American Otis Elevator Company, designed and installed systems that combined hydraulic power with innovative mechanics to transport visitors up the angled legs of the structure.

Interesting Facts

The Eiffel Tower, known as “La Tour Eiffel” in French, was designed by the engineer Gustave Eiffel and his company, Eiffel et Cie. The tower was constructed as the centerpiece of the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) held in Paris to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. At its completion in 1889, the Eiffel Tower stood as the tallest man-made structure in the world, with a height of 324 meters (1,063 feet). Including its antennas, it reaches a height of 330 meters (1,083 feet). It retained its title as the world’s tallest structure until 1930 when the Chrysler Building in New York City surpassed it in height.

The “Iron Lady” is one of the most visited monuments in the world, with millions of tourists coming from around the globe to see it each year. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of Paris from its observation decks. Visitors can ascend the tower using elevators or climb the stairs. There are three levels accessible to the public. The first and second levels have restaurants, shops, and exhibit spaces, and the third level, the summit doubtlessly provides the best views of the city.
