Tour was great…Matt was a very energetic tour guide. We enjoyed his explanations and he kept everything light and lively keeping everyone interested. He spoke about Notre Dame, France’s history and the architecture. The weather was perfect for a walking tour in November low 50’s with some sun.

Nice overview of how Paris began on Ile de la Cite and how Notre Dame was built. Special attention to its history and importance in French history. Lots of info about the fire and current restoration, which is what interested us most. The guide (Sophie) was knowledgeable and engaging. I would recommend this tour for people who are seeing Notre Dame for the first time, as well as those who have seen it before!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What is the Notre-Dame Cathedral? Notre Dame de Paris (“Our Lady of Paris”) is a Gothic masterpiece and one of the most famous cathedrals in the world. Located on Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris, it was built between 1163 and 1345 and is renowned for its stunning architecture, stained glass windows, and religious significance.

Is Notre Dame open to visitors? Since the fire in April 2019, Notre Dame has been closed to the public for restoration. However, the area around the cathedral is accessible, allowing visitors to view its facade and ongoing restoration efforts. The cathedral is expected to reopen to visitors in 2024, coinciding with the Paris Olympics.

What caused the 2019 fire? The fire started in the cathedral’s attic and caused the collapse of the iconic spire and severe damage to the roof. Investigations suggest it was likely an accidental electrical short circuit or a mishap related to renovation work.

Can I still see the Crown of Thorns or other relics? The Crown of Thorns, one of the most significant relics housed in Notre Dame, was saved during the fire and is now kept in the nearby Louvre Museum. Visitors can see it during specific religious ceremonies or exhibits.

How do I get to Notre-Dame Cathedral? Notre-Dame is centrally located in Paris on Île de la Cité. The easiest way to reach it is by metro: Use Line 4 to “Cité” station or Line 1 to “Châtelet” station, which is a short walk away. Alternatively, buses and Batobus river shuttles stop nearby.

Can I attend a service at Notre Dame? Before the fire, Notre Dame hosted regular masses and special events, which were open to the public. Services are expected to resume after the cathedral reopens. For now, many events have been relocated to other churches in Paris, such as Saint-Eustache or Saint-Sulpice.

What is the significance of the Notre Dame’s architecture? Notre Dame is a prime example of French Gothic architecture, featuring:

  • Rose Windows: Three massive stained-glass rose windows.
  • Flying Buttresses: Revolutionary for their time, they provide structural support and aesthetic beauty.
  • Sculptures and Gargoyles: Depict biblical stories and serve as water spouts.

Are the towers of Notre Dame still open to climb? The iconic towers of Notre Dame, which offer spectacular views of Paris and its gargoyles, are currently closed due to restoration. When they reopen, visitors will likely be able to climb the 387 steps again for a panoramic view.
